Yamamotoyama History

Tradition and innovation, handed down from generation to generation.

In 1690, the Yamamoto family established a tea shop, the first of its kind, specializing in steamed green tea, known as sencha. Meiji period documentation recounts that sencha was first invented by Nagatani Souen and sold in the Edo period by Yamamotoyama under its original name, Yamamoto Kahei Shoten, (Kahei Yamamoto’s Shop). Today, sencha is renown around the world for its delicious taste and health benefits.

Continuously innovating while remaining true to tradition, each generation of the Yamamoto family makes an imprint on our progression. Yamamotoyama is committed to quality first throughout the centuries, while always improving and creating new products to meet the needs of generations to come.

A Tea Room to Entertain All Five Senses

It's the small touches that bring out the best of these ingredients.

Gently pouring boiling water from a teapot cools the water ever so slightly to coax the subtly exceptional tastes of sencha. It is a mistake to overlook the small touches, as they are always the most memorable. Attention to detail is at the heart of our hospitality.

The Next 300 Years

Fujie sabo is our starting point for the next 300 years.

In 1690, the Yamamoto family moved from Kyoto to the new capital of Edo, modern-day Tokyo, and established a tea shop. For over three centuries, Yamamotoyama remains family owned and operated, drawing from its rich heritage and vast expertise to provide healthy and deliciously innovative foods. Green tea and roasted nori seaweed are the supporting stars of Japanese cuisine, elevating the performance of center stage ingredients. We feature these foods as the foundation for a genuinely superb taste of Japan.

Yamamotoyama connects Edo quality and authenticity with today's culinary creativity and experimentation. We look forward to bringing joy to future generations over the coming 300 years.
